What is GEO optimization? The guide for Quebec SMBs
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work that makes your site readable, understandable and recommendable by AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. SEO made you visible in a list of links; GEO makes you citable in a generated answer.
Your customers have changed how they search. Instead of typing "plumber South Shore" and comparing ten links, they ask an AI: "find me someone reliable to redo my bathroom in Brossard, within this budget." The AI reads the available sites and recommends two or three businesses. The question that matters for your SMB: is your site part of what the AI can read and cite, or is it recommending your competitor?
GEO vs SEO: what's the difference?
Both share the same foundations, but the end goal changes.
| Classic SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Show up in the top Google results | Get cited in the answer generated by the AI |
| Who reads your site | Googlebot, which indexes pages | GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Gemini, which extract answers |
| Winning format | Pages optimized by keyword | Clear answers to real questions, verifiable facts, structured data |
| How success is measured | Rankings, organic clicks | Mentions and recommendations in AI answers |
| The risk if you ignore it | Less traffic | The AI recommends your competitors instead of you |
Why has this become important now?
Three concrete shifts in 2025-2026 turned a niche topic into a business urgency:
- AI Mode in Google Search. Queries are becoming conversational and much longer. Google answers with a generated summary that cites a few sources, not with ten blue links.
- AI assistants as the starting point.A growing share of supplier research starts in ChatGPT or Perplexity, especially for "who can do X for me" type questions.
- Agents that scan sites.Google's new ad formats let users ask questions directly inside the ad, and it's the AI that goes and finds the answer on the advertiser's site. A site that's unreadable to AI becomes a liability even in paid advertising.
How do AI engines choose who to recommend?
No magic: AI recommends what it can read, understand and verify. Four criteria come up every time:
1. Your content is technically readable
AI bots read your site's raw HTML, often without executing the JavaScript. If your site is an application that displays nothing without JS, or if your firewall blocks AI bots, you don't exist to them. This can be tested and fixed.
2. Your content answers real questions
AI assembles answers. A site that puts the customer's question in a heading and answers it in two or three clear sentences is infinitely more citable than a site that piles up slogans. Prices, timelines and service areas are the most-searched information and the least often published.
3. Your data is structured
Structured data (the schema.org markup hidden in the code) tells machines who you are, what you sell, where you operate and how much it costs, in a format they understand without guessing.
4. Your facts are consistent everywhere
When your site, your Google profile, your LinkedIn and the directories tell the same story (name, phone, services, area), the AI trusts you. When they contradict each other, it hallucinates or ignores you. An official facts page on your site serves as an anti-error reference.
Checklist: is your site ready for AI?
The 12 points I check first in a GEO audit:
- The main content is visible without JavaScript (server-side rendering)
- AI bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) are not blocked by the firewall or robots.txt
- The SSL certificate is valid, including the www version of the domain
- The sitemap.xml exists and lists all the important pages
- An llms.txt file describes the business and points to the key pages
- Section headings are questions your customers actually ask
- Each question has a short, direct answer before the detail
- A rich FAQ (10 questions or more) exists and is marked up in structured data
- Prices, service areas and timelines are published somewhere
- Structured data describes the business, the person behind it and the services
- An official facts page serves as a source of truth
- Important images have text descriptions (bots read the text, not the pixels)
How much does GEO optimization cost?
For a Quebec SMB: a complete GEO audit runs around $800 to $1,500 CAD, and a full implementation (technical fixes, structured data, content restructuring) between $2,000 and $4,000 CAD depending on the size of the site. Far less than a redesign, far more profitable than waiting.
The audit produces a score, the list of real blockers (measured, not guessed) and a prioritized plan. The implementation can often be done on the existing site, without rebuilding it.
Frequently asked questions about GEO
Does GEO replace SEO?
No, it extends it. The fundamentals stay the same: a technically clean site, useful content, structured data. GEO adds a layer: making that content easy to cite for AI answer engines. Good GEO work almost always improves classic SEO at the same time.
Can my WordPress, Wix or Squarespace site be optimized for AI?
Yes, in most cases. These platforms serve HTML that AI bots can read. The fixes focus on content, heading structure, structured data and technical files (robots.txt, sitemap, llms.txt). The problem case: sites built as JavaScript applications without server-side rendering, where AI bots literally see nothing.
How long before you see GEO results?
Technical fixes are read as soon as the bots come back through: a few days to a few weeks. Getting cited in AI answers takes longer, because it also depends on the competition around the question being asked and the freshness of the indexes. It's foundational work, not a campaign you switch on.
How can I check for myself whether my site is visible to AI?
Quick test: ask ChatGPT or Perplexity what your business does, giving them your website address. If the answer is blank, made up or off the mark, the bots are having trouble reading you. You can also disable JavaScript in your browser and reload your site: what you see is roughly what an AI bot sees.
